1. When the first eukaryotes appear in the marine fossil record, would you expect to find life on land? If so, what organisms would you expect to see? 2. Imagine you went back in time and drove a truck through the ecosystem that would eventually be preserved in the Rhynie Chert. i) What geologic period and what absolute time would you have travelled back to? ii) After driving through the ecosystem, would you expect to have more arthropods splattered on your windshield or squashed on your tires? Explain. iii) On your tires, you find this piece of an arthropod, which may not represent the whole organism. Given what you know about relative abundances of terrestrial arthropod groups in the Rhynie Chert and for terrestrial ecosystems generally at this time, to what major arthropod group do these remains likely belong? In your answer, mention the three major terrestrial arthropod lineages that we discussed in class and describe features of each that you would use to identify these remains. iv) After leaving your truck, you go out into the Rhynie ecosystem to make some ecological measurements. Specifically, you collect and measure the biomass of primary producers, primary consumers (herbivores), secondary consumers (carnivores), and detritivores. Would you expect these amounts to look similar or different from a modern terrestrial ecosystem? Explain.
