A rectangular concrete-filled steel tube column with 3.3 m height is shown in Figure Q4. The steel tube is having a uniform thickness of 6 mm, with the width and depth of x1=160 mm and x2=240mm, respectively. Take elastic modulus of steel and concrete as 200 GPa and 30 GPa, respectively. Using the principle of compatibility, solve the following questions: (a) The column is subjected to 80degree celcius temperature rise without an axial load. Find the normal stresses induced in the steel tube and concrete core, assuming both ends of the column are fixed. Take the coefficient of thermal expansion for steel and concrete as 12*10^(?6)/? and 8*10^(?6)/?, respectively. b) Find the axial forces and normal stresses in the steel tube and concrete core when the column is subjected to a concentric force x3=800kN at the top through a rigid plate. Take the base of the column as fixed-end.
