Given what you have learned in this chapter tell me in 3 (complete and grammatically correct) sentences or less why you think the United Kingdom spends so much less then the US on healthcare. Beveridge Model Another model named after an individual is the Beveridge model named after William Beveridge. Beveridge designed Britain's National Health Service. In this system, everyone in the country is covered by insurance which is paid for by the government through tax payments. In this system healthcare is paid for just like the police force or the library would be, it is essentially a public service. Most hospitals are owned by the government and some doctors are even government employees, although if they are private their fees are collected from the government not individuals. The government has control over costs, what doctors can do and what they are allowed to charge. As you would imagine costs are low and individuals never get a doctor bill. Wha uses this model. - Great Britain - Spain - Scandinavia(most of it) - New Zealand - Hong Kong - Cuba
In the US we have parts of all of these systems in play, it just depends who you are and what your situation is. Veterans for example have access to a Beveridge model, with care paid by the government. and somewhat regulated. Medicare runs similar to the National Healthcare model with private providers paid for by the government. People who are employed in the US and get insurance through theirjob, are using a system most like the Bismark model. If you don't fall into these categories and have no health insurance treatment is available if you can pay the bill out of pocket or if you're sick enough to go to the ER this is similar to what happens in poor countries with no organized health insurance. Do you see a problem with this? There is a class difference inherent in the us system. The other countries we have discussed have one model for all and it tends to be fair, simple and less expensive. Healthcare in the US is expensive per capita, the US out spends all othernations. It is not because we use healthcare or services more than other countries it is because our healthcare is so expensive in comparison to other developed countries. Drugs, medical services and healthcare salaries all cost more in the United States then they do on average in other countries. Now that you know about other systems perhaps you can guess why that might be? In 2017 the USA spent \$10,224 per capita on healthcare, to put that in perspective here are some per capita healthcare spending costs in other developed countries in the sameyear, Switzerland \( \$ 8,009 \), Germany \( \$ 5,728 \), france \$4,902, Canada \( \$ 4,826 \) and the United Kingdom \( \$ 4,246 \).
