Perform the rudimentary design of an electrical generation system. The system provides a constant 2-kW electrical output. A fuel cell and a PV array are part of the system. The fuel cell system efficiency is 50% and the electrolyser system efficiency is 75%. The fuel cell operates 12 hours during the night. During the day the PV array provides 2kW for the load and it runs the electrolyser. During these 12 hours the electrolyser operates with 22% capacity factor. – Calculate the amount of hydrogen to be stored (in kg) and the size of the storage if the electrolyser is capable of pressurising hydrogen up to 100 bars. – Calculate the electrical input into the electrolyser system: amount of electricity in kWh, average power input, nominal power input. – Calculate the nominal power of the PV array and the size of the PV array assuming 140W/m2 . Note that hydrogen has an energy content of 142 MJ/kg and a density of 0.08988 g/litre at normal conditions (i.e. NTP: 20 ?C, 1 atmosphere).
